Read on below, to get an insight into her hair world…
Hello there, Kirsty! Thanks for taking the time to chat to us. Firstly, tell us what inspired you to become a hairdresser?
Well, at first it was my Aunty! She has been a hairdresser since she was a young gal! She showed so much love and passion for such a hugely competitive industry, and still to this day LOVES walking into work. I wanted to wake up and love my job as well ha ha!
How did you begin your career and get into the industry?
As soon as I eft school, I went straight to TAFE then two months in, jumped into an apprenticeship, and the rest is history!
You've recently began freelancing, rather than being employed by a salon, how are you finding the change up so far?
I LOVE IT! It's the best thing I have done in my career so far! The change was scary at first but it’s always the thought of it that is much worse than the actual transition!
I also didn't expect to be learning so much every day.
Tell us the best part about your job?
I laugh all day every day, no matter who I have in my chair or working with me. There is laughter all around, and I love that.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
I was able to work in NYFW and that was pretty amazing, and eye opening! It left me feeling so ready to take on the world (New York will do that to you).
Which part of your job do you find the hardest / most challenging?
I think what I find challenging in my job is actually turning off at the end of the day! I am yet to find that work-life balance ha ha.
What is the best piece of advice you have received during your journey in the hair industry?
As soon as you think you know everything, or you don't want to learn the new things coming out, hang up your scissors.
What’s the greatest thing you’ve learnt so far, during your career?
How to talk and hold conversations with any human I come across.
What’s your most common hair request from clients?
BLONDE! Better yet, that 'lived in' blonde look. It's a fave for my clients (and me).
What is the most common hair struggle your clients come to you in the salon with?
The fact that they can’t do it themselves (style wise)!
I am currently working on how to fix this for them. I can make their hair look amazing, but they can’t recreate that perfect wave or high pony at home! Don't worry girls, I'm working on it and I got you!
What do you think is the key mistake clients are making with their hair / haircare routine?
Often, I find that clients only want to take care of their hair AFTER they feel it becoming dry or damaged!
I try to let my clients know it’s probably best if we avoid that ‘dry stage’ and just keep it healthy by sticking with the recommended routine.
What is your number 1 hair hack we should know about?
Curling my hair the night before and sleeping on it (with my pure silk pillowcase of course)! Just a few small touch ups are required the next day and its perfect!
What’s your go-to drug-store hair product for girls on a budget?
I don't usually recommend supermarket products for my babes, but usually, I will sit down with them and work out what their price range is, and recommend professional haircare that I know will still be great for them! There are plenty of affordable options out there now, it’s great!
Which hair trend are you loving the most right now?
Hair scarves!! Girls, it's super easy to play around with any fabric you can find and they’re so quick to put in!
Which hair trend do you wish would disappear and never return?
If I had to pick one, it would be home balayage! I’ve got 4 clients trying to fix it up and I'm telling you girls - you spend more money on trying to fix it, than you would getting it done properly in the first place!
What advice do you have for any gals wanting to up their hair game this year?
Don't overthink or hold back from doing anything have fun with your hair!
Tell us, what’s your favourite product from the Hello Hair range?
I am obsessed with my Island Escape Hydrating Mask! Every time I have a friend or my sister over, I force them to have it on with me ha ha!!
What is next for you in 2018 and beyond?
I am LOVING where I am at right now in my career, so the next thing is to perfect this new stage I am going through.
As for beyond well as soon as I know, you'll know!
